The Royal school of Dentistry (Jelly Beans tribute)
This piece, with its clinical (and cynical) look, was born out of the Jelly Beans sponsorship we got for the Design Work in Progress Show. We were asked to produce a piece celebrating Jelly Beans, and so I did. I celebrated them exactly for what they are, the sugary equivalent of an H bomb. And in these terms, I decided to focus more on the effects of the candy rather than the pleasure of eating it. Jelly Beans, with their varied and brilliant colors looked perfect to be arranged in the typical disposition of a table from a medical school. Under the title The Royal School of Dentistry there is a small caption saying: Jelly Beans Cluster (jbc, in medical terms) attack scheme. Each Jelly Beans cluster is connected to the tooth on which it will unleash its destructive power (for example the red-orange-black-blue cluster will act on judgment teeth). The connection is highlighted with white lines on white (visible just from very close), to leave unspoilt the cleanliness of the composition. Someone might argue that is a bit counterproductive to get sponsorship by someone and then make work mocking their products. I think it was very naive to set the show brief on Jelly Beans expecting someone as unpredictable as me to turn out with an Ad for them...
